Shrunken, beady eyes leer down upon the innocent passersby, and
Little do they know, the lurking evil behind the stone-carved distortions.
The sun shrinks behind a distant horizon, while amber rays blanket the earth.
There is the dark underworld waits to appear in its varied contortions.
Night slinks ink black, soaking up the last rays of light and hope.
The avenue is a ribbon which links life to death, hope to despair.
Above it all, sits the evil incarnate, energy slowly electrifies its frame.
Ears twitch, eyes slowly roll, razor sharp flex and nostrils flair.
It stretches deeply, tail unfurling and bony skeleton creaking
Leaning over the sharp precipice, it sees the unsuspecting lonely figure
Strolling through the darkened cobblestone streets.
Life hangs by a tenuous string, the creature’s sharp talons ready to clip.
This is an example of the Gargoyle poetry.
Students were to use pictures in class to inspire the four rhyming lines in 4 stanza form. They had to use a quote from any source that best described the theme of their poem or feelings it should evoke (fear, loathing, dread, etc.). They could draw or insert from online sources the gargoyle picture.
