You have now determined what your government will be; how the infrastructure will be paid and run; and created an economic plan that will enable your citizens to survive as well as prosper. Looking at similar islands in your locale, you need to decide what your natural resources will be on the island. How many acres of timber (suitable for building) will your island produce? What minerals or metals will you have and will you mine for it? What resources will you be able to harvest from the ocean? How about the volcano (es) that helped to form your island? What will be the source of energy for your island (geothermal, hydro etc.?) You may bring to the island certain domesticated animals: which types will they be and what will be their purpose? These are all things that need to be listed on your background information page.
Now that you have decided the above, you need to clarify how much if any you wish to convert from raw resources or materials to finished goods. This will require factories or cottage industries. You will need to decide how will these be powered, worked and made not to pollute the environment. Will you be importing raw materials to help pay for government programs? You should already have ideas on how much if any you will be importing finished goods from the mainlands (such as Australia and Europe or Asia.)
Activity 4: Identifying your Resources and Industries
1. You will need to complete a list of natural resources on your back ground page. You need to look at New Zealand (below) and other nearby islands to see what the possible combinations can be. (CIA Fact book)
|
natural gas, iron ore, sand, coal, timber, hydropower, gold, limestone |
2. You will need to determine your source of power for your Utopia and how that will impact on the environment.
3. What domesticated animals will you bring to the island and how will they be used? What non-indigenous plants will you need to bring? You must make sure that they can grow in that environment/ climate.
4. What kind of factories or industries will you need and how will you get the raw goods for them to create the finished goods? Will you have timber cutting operations and mining? Or will you important resources from the outside to finish? Will you have no factories and import all finished goods?
5. A Resources and Industry Report needs to include information from any of the above questions.
