UTOPIA: Your Environment
All Utopias should have a very important component:
protecting the environment. You are to create ideas on how to dispose of waste;
recycle items; and harvest resources in a thoughtful and conservative manner.
You will have to also take this into consideration housing and cities as well so
that they do not impact on the environment. How much farmland will you need to
support your population? How much will be designated green areas not to be
developed?
If you are allowing factories and mining, you need to make
sure that they are not polluting the environment. If you are having ports,
airports and other forms of transportation, how are they going to be powered; be
energy efficient and nonpolluting?
Activity 5: Describe your environment and
how you will preserve it
- How will you solve recycling issues (remember most
goods, food, paper, etc create waste)?
- Transportation typically creates pollution (sound and
air), how will you solve this problem?
- If you allow timber to be cut, what will you do to
reforest the island?
- If you are harvesting from the ocean, how will you
preserve the supply of food? If you are farming, you will need to educate
farmers about crop rotation and not polluting the water with pesticides etc?
(organic gardening?)
- How will you build your houses? Timber? Concrete
(need limestone and other elements)?
- How will your energy source improve if not support
your environmental policy?
- You will need to write an environmental policy
or rules for your new Utopia that promotes or enforces preserving the island
and its natural resources.
